Santos Warehouse; from coffee depot to photo paradise
The Netherlands Photo Museum reopened on February 7, 2026, in the beautiful Santos Warehouse in Rotterdam-Katendrecht. This 1903 monument was once a coffee warehouse. Now it houses over 6.5 million photographs: from old daguerreotypes to modern digital works. One of the largest photo collections in the world, with a strong focus on Dutch, analog, and documentary photography from the 20th century.

I was involved in Open Archives, a permanent display on the second and third floors, designed by Caspar Conijn and Kim Recht. My assignment: to design the illuminated image walls for the second floor.

For months, I immersed myself in thousands of photos and developed a graphic framework that presents them clearly, atmospherically, and with respect for their content; as if they belong exactly where they are.
