Back to Tivoli

Back to the smell of beer and smoke. Back to legendary concerts. Back to the sticky floor of this unique spot in Utrecht’s nightlife.

What a fantastic assignment this was to work on! For me personally, it was a gift to dive into this rich image archive. It was special to come across posters from concerts I attended myself, over 20 years ago.

From squat to icon, Tivoli Oudegracht has undergone an impressive transformation: from a medieval monastery to one of the most important pop venues in the Netherlands. What started as a squat by young people looking for a place of their own grew into a venue with groundbreaking programming. With room for punk, rock, pop, reggae, hip hop, and dance during more than 5,000 concerts and dance nights.

In the exhibition, you will discover more about 30 years of Utrecht pop history through the finest posters, photos, films, and objects from the Tivoli archive. Podium handled the concept and spatial design and involved me in the process at this stage. Commissioned by Het Utrechts Archief, I subsequently designed the entire graphic identity for the exhibition.
