The gardens of Muiderslot
A new exhibition will open in the spring of 2025 in the iconic Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot, a castle with deep historical ties to Amsterdam. Originally built in 1285 by Count Floris, the castle later became the property of the city of Amsterdam and was nicknamed ‘The Castle of Amsterdam’. It served as a defensive structure for centuries, but under the influence of Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft in the 17th century it was given a new purpose. Hooft transformed the castle into a residence, surrounded by gardens and a plum orchard. During the spring and summer, Hooft lived here with his family, and his influence on the castle and gardens is still visible today.
For the interactive exhibition about the gardens of Muiderslot, I designed the entrance area. The design is inspired by the rich history of the castle and gardens, with special attention to the plum blossom that symbolizes Hooft’s orchard. The colour palette is composed of classic colours that refer to the castle and bright shades that represent the garden, with the colours of the plum blossom setting the tone.
Flowers play a central role in the design, both in the visual elements and in the atmosphere of the space. To create depth and dynamism, the graphic elements stand out from the wall, giving the space a lively, interactive look that invites the visitor to explore further.
